Winter Ladakh: Khardung La, Nubra & Frozen Pangong

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Oxygen Is a Luxury – Arrive in Leh

Note: Rest on Day 1 is non-negotiable. Your body needs time to adjust to the altitude – the mountains will wait.

  • Land at Leh airport – our team meets you for the group transfer to the hotel
  • Check in to your centrally heated room and do absolutely nothing heroic: today is all about acclimatising
  • No sightseeing today. Your new best friend, the oximeter, decides if you even step out
  • Evening trip briefing with your trip captain and the gang, then a hot dinner at the hotel
  • Overnight: Leh (centrally heated hotel)
  • Meals: Dinner

Day 2: Monasteries, Markets & a Ladakhi Lunch

The order of the sightseeing may change with local conditions and opening hours.

  • After breakfast, ease into Leh at a slow, altitude-friendly pace
  • Shey Palace – the old palace of Ladakh's kings
  • Thiksey Monastery – the one that looks like a mini Potala Palace on a hill
  • Hemis Monastery – one of Ladakh's most famous, if the road and timing allow
  • A proper Ladakhi lunch: thukpa, skyu and butter tea (acquired taste, we promise nothing )
  • Evening stroll in Leh Market for apricot goodies, pashmina, woollens and those gloves you forgot, time permitting
  • Leh (centrally heated hotel)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Up and Over Khardung La into Nubra Valley

  • Drive up the famous Khardung La in full winter mode – snow walls, frozen views and the mandatory "I was here" photo at the top (road and weather permitting)
  • Roll down into Nubra Valley, where the snow gives way to wide valleys and sand dunes
  • Diskit Monastery and the giant Maitreya Buddha watching over the valley
  • Hunder sand dunes – sand dunes and snow peaks in one frame, if conditions allow (camel ride optional, at your own cost)
  • Check in to your heated stay in Nubra, dinner and stories around the heater
  • Overnight: Nubra Valley (rooms with heating)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4: Republic Day in Nubra: Panamik Hot Springs & Chill

Note: Panamik is about an hour's drive from Diskit/Hunder. Access to the springs depends on winter conditions on the day.

  • Happy Republic Day! We celebrate it in one of the most beautiful valleys in the country
  • After a slow breakfast, drive along the Nubra river to Panamik village
  • Panamik Hot Springs – natural hot springs bubbling out of the mountains in the middle of winter. Steam rising off the water, snow peaks all around, and all of us pretending it isn't minus ten outside
  • Back in Nubra for a properly lazy afternoon: soak up the sun, walk around the village and take the pictures Nubra is famous for – frozen streams, dunes and white peaks in one frame
  • Republic Day evening with the group, dinner and chai on repeat
  • Overnight: Nubra Valley (rooms with heating)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5: Frozen Pangong via Shyok, Back to Leh via Chang La

Important: This is a long, weather-dependent day. Our local team finalises the route on the day based on actual road conditions – if Shyok or Chang La is closed, we take the safest option.

  • Early start (wear every layer you packed) for the big drive of the trip
  • Drive along the Shyok river road towards Pangong Tso, if the route is open and safe
  • Pangong in January: the lake turns into a giant sheet of ice and looks like nature hit pause. How much it freezes depends on the weather, so every winter is a surprise
  • Photo stop at the famous 3 Idiots spot, where accessible
  • Head back to Leh over Chang La, one of the highest roads in the world, if open
  • Check in at Leh, hot dinner, early night – you've earned it

About the Trip

Experience the magical beauty of Ladakh in winter with Desh Videsh. This 6-day winter expedition takes you through snow-covered mountain passes, peaceful monasteries, remote Himalayan villages and the spectacular landscapes of frozen Pangong Lake. Unlike the busy summer season, winter brings a quieter side of Ladakh, where snow-covered surroundings and freezing temperatures create an entirely different travel experience.

From crossing the famous Khardung La to exploring Nubra Valley, visiting the natural hot springs of Panamik and witnessing the winter transformation of Pangong Lake, this journey combines adventure, local experiences and comfortable group travel.

Designed for travellers who want to discover Ladakh beyond its usual summer attractions, this winter group trip includes centrally heated accommodation, heated Innova Crysta transfers, an experienced trip captain and local ground support throughout the journey.

Discover the Unique Beauty of Ladakh in Winter

Winter transforms Ladakh into a spectacular Himalayan landscape. Snow-covered mountains, frozen streams, quiet monasteries and dramatic high-altitude roads create a completely different atmosphere from the region's popular summer season.

With fewer tourists around, you get an opportunity to experience the region at a slower pace and appreciate its natural beauty, local culture and remote mountain communities.

This winter journey takes you across some of Ladakh's most remarkable destinations, including Leh, Khardung La, Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake. You will also experience the warmth of local hospitality, enjoy traditional Ladakhi food and celebrate Republic Day in the beautiful surroundings of Nubra Valley.

Experience the Famous Khardung La Pass in Winter

Khardung La is one of the most recognised high-altitude mountain passes in Ladakh. During winter, its surroundings become particularly dramatic, with snow-covered mountain slopes, icy roads and panoramic Himalayan views.

The drive from Leh towards Nubra Valley offers an opportunity to experience the changing mountain landscapes as you cross this famous pass. It is also a memorable stop for photography and enjoying the incredible surroundings.

Road accessibility depends on snowfall, weather and local authorities' safety decisions, so the crossing will be subject to conditions on the day.

Explore Nubra Valley and Its Winter Landscapes

Nubra Valley offers a fascinating combination of mountain scenery, wide-open landscapes and distinctive cultural experiences. In winter, the valley becomes quieter, with snow-covered peaks, frozen streams and peaceful villages creating a beautiful Himalayan setting.

During your stay, explore Diskit Monastery and its impressive Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the valley. You can also visit the Hunder Sand Dunes, where the contrast between sandy landscapes and snow-covered mountains makes for memorable photographs, depending on local conditions.

The valley offers a different perspective of Ladakh, combining natural beauty with opportunities to discover its local culture and surroundings.

Celebrate Republic Day at Panamik Hot Springs

One of the distinctive experiences of this journey is celebrating Republic Day in Nubra Valley. Instead of spending the occasion in a crowded city, enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings and a group travel experience in one of Ladakh's beautiful valleys.

The journey includes a visit to Panamik, a village known for its natural hot springs. Surrounded by the mountains of Nubra, these springs offer an interesting contrast to the freezing winter temperatures.

You can enjoy the surrounding scenery, spend time with fellow travellers and experience a quieter side of Ladakhi life. Access to Panamik Hot Springs depends on winter road conditions and local accessibility.

Witness the Winter Beauty of Pangong Lake

Pangong Tso is among the most famous attractions in Ladakh, known for its extraordinary mountain setting and changing lake colours. Winter gives this high-altitude lake an entirely different appearance, with freezing temperatures often transforming large sections of its surface into ice.

The journey towards Pangong through the Shyok River route offers dramatic mountain views and a memorable winter road experience. You may also stop at the famous 3 Idiots photography location, subject to accessibility.

The return journey towards Leh is planned through Chang La, depending on road conditions and safety assessments. As both routes are weather-dependent, the local team will decide the safest travel arrangements.

The extent of freezing at Pangong Lake varies with weather conditions, and a completely frozen lake cannot be guaranteed.

Important Things to Know Before Travelling to Ladakh in Winter

A winter trip to Ladakh requires careful preparation because of extreme cold, high altitude and unpredictable mountain weather. Travellers should arrive prepared and follow the guidance of the local team throughout the journey.

  • Carry thermal innerwear, insulated jackets, waterproof winter footwear, gloves, woollen socks and warm headwear.
  • Keep moisturiser, lip balm, sunscreen and personal medication handy.
  • Allow your body to acclimatise after arriving in Leh. Avoid unnecessary physical exertion on the first day.
  • Stay hydrated and follow the trip captain's instructions regarding altitude and outdoor activities.
  • Carry essential personal medicines and consult your doctor before travelling if you have concerns about high-altitude exposure.
  • Be prepared for changes in the travel schedule because of snowfall, road closures and local weather conditions.
  • Follow local authorities' instructions and safety guidelines during sightseeing and mountain travel.

Oxygen support in vehicles is an additional safety arrangement, not a substitute for medical assessment or proper acclimatisation.

All sightseeing, high-altitude road crossings and outdoor experiences are subject to weather, road accessibility and local safety conditions. The local team may modify the route or arrangements whenever necessary.
