About the Trip
Hampta Pass Trek with Chandratal Lake – The Ultimate Himalayan Adventure
The Hampta Pass Trek with Chandratal Lake is one of the most breathtaking and rewarding trekking experiences in the Indian Himalayas. Nestled in the majestic mountains of Himachal Pradesh, this trek offers a unique combination of lush green valleys, dense forests, alpine meadows, snow-covered landscapes, dramatic mountain passes, and the mesmerizing beauty of Chandratal Lake. Whether you are a beginner looking for your first Himalayan trek or an experienced trekker searching for an unforgettable mountain adventure, Hampta Pass delivers an extraordinary experience unlike any other.
Starting from the beautiful hill town of Manali, this trek takes you through the scenic Kullu Valley before crossing the mighty Hampta Pass at an altitude of approximately 14,100 feet. The route showcases a dramatic transition in landscapes, from the green and vibrant valleys of Kullu to the rugged, barren terrain of Lahaul and Spiti. This geographical contrast is what makes the Hampta Pass Trek one of the most unique and visually stunning treks in India.
Your adventure begins with an overnight journey from Delhi to Manali, where you can enjoy the cool mountain air and prepare yourself for the days ahead. Upon arrival in Manali, travelers have the opportunity to explore local attractions such as Hadimba Devi Temple, Tibetan Monastery, and the bustling Mall Road before beginning the trekking expedition.
The trekking journey officially starts from Jobra, a beautiful location surrounded by pine forests and mountain streams. The first trekking stretch to Chika serves as a warm-up hike, allowing participants to acclimatize while enjoying picturesque views of rivers, valleys, and meadows. Camping under the open Himalayan sky at Chika offers trekkers their first taste of wilderness and mountain life.
As the trek progresses towards Balu Ka Ghera, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. Trekkers cross streams, rocky terrain, and vast alpine landscapes while gradually gaining altitude. The stunning campsite at Balu Ka Ghera is surrounded by towering mountains and provides incredible views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The peaceful atmosphere and star-filled skies make it one of the most memorable camping experiences of the trek.
The highlight of the journey is undoubtedly the Hampta Pass crossing. Starting early in the morning, trekkers ascend through snow patches, steep mountain slopes, and rugged terrain before reaching the summit of Hampta Pass at approximately 14,100 feet. Standing at the pass is a truly unforgettable moment. The panoramic views of snow-clad peaks, deep valleys, glaciers, and distant mountain ranges create a magical experience that remains etched in memory forever.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Hampta Pass Trek is witnessing the dramatic shift in landscape after crossing the pass. On one side lies the lush greenery of Kullu Valley, while the other reveals the barren yet mesmerizing beauty of Lahaul and Spiti. This striking contrast makes the trek feel like a journey through two completely different worlds.
After descending from the pass, trekkers reach Shia Ghoru, a beautiful campsite surrounded by raw Himalayan wilderness. The sense of accomplishment after crossing Hampta Pass combined with the breathtaking surroundings creates a rewarding experience for every participant.
The adventure continues towards Chhatru, an important junction connecting Hampta Pass, Rohtang Pass, and Spiti Valley. The rugged landscapes, towering mountain walls, and vast open spaces of this region showcase the true beauty of the trans-Himalayan terrain.
One of the biggest attractions included in this itinerary is a visit to the spectacular Chandratal Lake, often referred to as the "Moon Lake." Located at a high altitude amidst the mountains of Spiti, Chandratal is famous for its crystal-clear blue waters, stunning reflections, and peaceful surroundings. The lake changes colors throughout the day depending on sunlight and weather conditions, creating a magical visual experience for visitors.
Surrounded by barren mountains and pristine natural beauty, Chandratal Lake offers some of the most spectacular photography opportunities in Himachal Pradesh. Spending time here allows travelers to appreciate the untouched beauty of the Himalayas while enjoying moments of peace and tranquility away from crowded tourist destinations.
Throughout the trek, participants are supported by experienced trek leaders, local guides, cooks, and support staff who ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Comfortable campsites, nutritious vegetarian meals, safety equipment, and essential trekking support help make the journey accessible even for first-time trekkers.
The Hampta Pass Trek is particularly famous during the summer and monsoon seasons when the valleys are covered with wildflowers, green meadows, flowing streams, and snow patches. The ever-changing scenery ensures that every day brings new landscapes and unforgettable moments.
Apart from adventure and natural beauty, the trek also provides an opportunity to disconnect from daily routines and reconnect with nature. The peaceful mountain environment, campfire conversations, breathtaking sunrises, and starry nights create memories that last a lifetime.
Whether you are seeking adventure, photography opportunities, mountain camping, or simply a chance to explore one of India's most beautiful trekking routes, the Hampta Pass Trek with Chandratal Lake is an experience that exceeds expectations. From crossing a high-altitude mountain pass to witnessing the magical beauty of Chandratal Lake, every moment of this journey showcases the grandeur of the Himalayas.
